‘Online’ refers to many forms of digital communication, such as asynchronous messaging (e.g. SMS, WhatsApp and emails), web-based video conferencing and audio services, and telephone.
SMS and telephone therapy will require adequate and unrestricted access to a cellular network. This may prove challenging in rural areas where cellular services can be intermittent. In such cases, alternative means of delivering therapy should be considered, such as web-based interfaces.
Online therapy delivered over the internet requires the installation of appropriate and secure/encrypted software (such as email applications for text-based or Zoom and VSEE for remote face-to-face sessions) and sufficiently strong and reliable internet connectivity strength throughout the therapy. It is recommended that you use broadband rather than roaming internet connection (3G/4G) to avoid needless signal interruptions and buffering. It is also essential that unnecessary interruptions and security issues are avoided by keeping system applications up to date. These include updates to the operating system, browsing encryption systems (SSL), anti-virus and anti-spam/marketing software, notification and pop-up blocking services, and firewalls and encryption software.
